What Residential Treatment Is
Residential treatment means living at the facility for the length of your stay, rather than attending appointments and going home afterwards.
It is sometimes called inpatient rehab. The idea behind it is simple: for a while, recovery is the only thing you have to do. No commute, no work calls, nothing to arrange around it. People who have tried to get sober while carrying on with everything else usually understand immediately why that matters.
At Dunn Recovery, residential treatment follows detox in the same house. There is no transfer, no second intake and no settling in twice. The staff who saw you through the hardest few days are the ones still there a fortnight later.
We are licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services for detox and residential treatment, and accredited by The Joint Commission.Â
Is residential the right level of care?
Not everyone needs it. These are the things that usually point one way or the other. If you are not sure, call and we will talk it through — including when the answer is that you need something we do not provide.
Residential tends to make sense when
- Stopping at home has been tried and has not held
- Withdrawal needs supervision — particularly alcohol or benzodiazepines
- Home is where the using happens, and leaving it is part of the answer
- There is a mental health condition in the picture as well
- Daily life has become organised around the substance
- Someone needs a stretch of time with nothing else to manage
Something else may fit better when
- There are caring responsibilities that cannot be set down
- A medical condition needs hospital-level care alongside treatment
- Outpatient support has been working and simply needs strengthening
- The person is not ready to stay, and a first conversation matters more
We do not provide outpatient care. If that is the right level for you, we will say so on the first call and help you find it.
What the days look like
Structure is most of the point. Most people arrive from a life that had lost its shape entirely, and the routine does a lot of the early work on its own.
Mornings
An early, regular start. Breakfast is made and eaten in the house, together.
One-to-one sessions
Individual counselling, working through what brought you here rather than only how to stop.
Group work
Small groups. Hearing your own situation described by someone else is often the thing that lands.
Meals together
Food is prepared in the house. Eating at a table with other people is part of the recovery, not an interruption to it.
Downtime
Time in the house and the yard. Rest is not wasted time in the first weeks — most people are exhausted.
Checking in
Regular reviews of how the stay is going and what the plan needs to be when it ends.
Six Beds
Most residential facilities are built around far larger numbers. Dunn Recovery was built around six, and it changes what treatment feels like from the first day.
6
The most people in the house at any time. You are not one of thirty.
1
One location. Nobody is moved between buildings partway through a stay.
24/7
Staff on site around the clock, and the admissions line answered at any hour.
In a small house the staff know your name, your history and what kind of week you have had without looking anything up. Group sessions are small enough that nobody can sit quietly at the back for a month. And when something changes — a bad day, a difficult phone call home — somebody notices it the same day rather than the following week.

How We Work
Which methods are used, and how much, depends on the person. These are the ones drawn on most often during a residential stay.
Looking at the thoughts that come before the drink or the drug, and learning to catch them earlier.
Skills for sitting with distress, managing strong emotion, and handling the relationships that set it off.
A structured method for working with traumatic memory, used where trauma is part of the picture.
Trauma-informed Care
The whole approach assumes something may sit underneath the substance use, and moves at the pace the person sets.
How long a stay lasts
There is no single answer, and anyone who gives you one without asking a question first is guessing.
Length of stay depends on the substance, how long it has been used, whether there is a mental health condition alongside it, and what someone is going back to. Detox is usually a matter of days. Residential treatment is longer, and the right length is a clinical decision rather than a package you buy.
We will give you a realistic range on the first call, once we understand the situation. If your insurance is involved, what your plan will authorise is part of that conversation too — and we will tell you what we think before we tell you what the plan allows.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is residential treatment?
Residential treatment means living at the facility for the length of your stay rather than attending appointments from home. It is sometimes called inpatient rehab. At Dunn Recovery it follows detox in the same house, with the same team.
Do I have to do detox first?
Usually, if there is physical dependence. Detox and residential treatment happen in the same house here, so moving between them does not mean moving anywhere.
How long does residential treatment last?
It depends on the substance, the history, and what someone is going back to. We will give you a realistic range on the first call rather than a number that sounds reassuring.
How many people are in the house?
Six. That is the whole facility, and it is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation.
Do you treat men and women?
Yes, both.
Can someone be admitted the same day?
Often, when it is clinically appropriate and a bed is free. Because we are small, the person answering the phone knows immediately what is available.
Is Dunn Recovery licensed for residential treatment?
Yes. We are licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services for detox and residential treatment under licence 330221AP, valid through 31 July 2028, and accredited by The Joint Commission.
Do you take my insurance?
We are out of network with all carriers. We work with most PPO plans on an out-of-network basis and will check your benefits at no cost before you commit to anything.
Where are you located?
22650 Lost Road, Wildomar, California 92595, in Riverside County. It is our only location.
What happens after treatment ends?
Before you leave we build a plan with you — ongoing therapy, support meetings, and who to call on a hard day. You leave with it written down.
Call and we will tell you what we can do
Someone answers 24 hours a day. The first call is a conversation, not a sales pitch — if we are not the right place, we will say so.
